Wear and Care

How to handle Airgami?

Please handle Airgami by the harness lobes only. These are where the harness attaches to the mask on the left and right sides. Avoid touching the Airgami surface. Deformation could affect the fit and function.

Which end is up?

The Airgami Infinite-a logo (it looks like an infinity sign made of two letters "a" stem-to-stem) should be on your nose.

How do you don (put on) Airgami?

Please refer to the "Donning Airgami" section on the Sizing page.

Does facial hair affect the fit?

Facial hair lifts a respirator's edge seal away from the skin. Even a little bit allows microscopic particles to leak in and out. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that the skin be hairless / shaven where the respirator edge seal contacts the face. See illustrations by CDC on which facial hairstyles are compatible with tight fitting respirators. These guidelines apply to Airgami as well.

Should I be able to smell odors if I have Airgami on properly?

Airgami is designed to filter out non-oil particles down to sub-micron in size. There are two aspects: size and non-oil.

  • Our sense of smell can detect molecules that are orders of magnitude smaller than a micron. You could smell certain molecules small enough to pass through the filter.
  • If a smell is carried by oil particles, such as perfume and essential oils, it could pass through the filter. To block oil particles, a respirator needs to be rated P95, P99, etc.

Can I continue to use Airgami when water droplets form on Airgami?

If the usage environment is both humid and cold, condensation may form on Airgami when it is being used. Condensation may accumulate on the interior surface and/or exterior surface of Airgami. Airgami could still function but breathing resistance may increase until such time as the mask is dry again.

Can Airgami be reused multiple times?

Yes.

Can I rinse my Airgami in water?

Yes. Please see Rinse and Disinfect instructions.

How do I disinfect my Airgami?

Please see Rinse and Disinfect instructions.

Can I use UV-C, isopropyl alcohol, soap, bleach, or vinegar to clean Airgami? How about ozone?

Do NOT use UV-C, isopropyl alcohol, soap, bleach, or vinegar on Airgami. Do not use any type of oil. These damage the filter.

Our filter supplier has not tested the filter with ozone. We cannot recommend ozone at this time.

How to protect Airgami when not using it?

It is best to put Airgami in a Tupperware. A container 5 1/2" in diameter and 3 1/4" deep can hold one Airgami of size Small, Medium or Large.

How long will my Airgami last?

It depends on the amount of usage, the use environment, the number of heat disinfection cycles, handling, and the storage conditions.

    • Dirty, dusty, heavily polluted air can clog up the filter quickly.
    • The filter has been tested to meet 95% filtration efficiency after the equivalent of 48 cycles of heat disinfections.
    • Airgami should be handled by the harness lobes only. Handling the Airgami main body directly could cause Airgami to lose shape, which may affect the fit and function.

If the filter is visibly dirty, breathing resistance increases, and/or leakage develops, it is time to replace Airgami.

Usage

Is Airgami NIOSH and FDA approved?

No.

Airgami passed independent tests in compliance with 42 CFR Part 84 as performed by Nelson Labs.

What kind of filter does Airgami have?

Please see Specification.

Will Airgami protect me if there's no oxygen?

No. Airgami does not supply you with oxygen or air to breathe. Airgami filters out particulates and aerosols in the air so that you won't inhale them. Airgami should not be used in an environment with insufficient oxygen or with a high concentration of toxic substances.

Does Airgami contain metal? Can I wear Airgami for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)?

Airgami does not contain any metal, metal nanoparticles, or antimicrobial coatings.

Please note that some MRI facilities simply would not allow any type of masks except the ones they provide.

Does Airgami fit children?

Airgami size Small could fit children as young as 10 years old. However, children need to be guided on how to properly put on / take off, handle and store Airgami.

General Information on Respirators

What are the roles of NIOSH, CDC, FDA and OSHA in respiratory protection?

NIOSH: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
CDC: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
FDA: The Food and Drug Administration
OSHA: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration

NIOSH is a part of CDC. CDC and FDA are parts of Department of Health and Human Services. OSHA is a part of Department of Labor. All are US federal agencies.

NIOSH is responsible for the testing and approval of all respirators used in occupational settings. In addition to carrying out tests, NIOSH reviews respirators’ engineering designs and manufacturing quality processes, and performs post-market evaluation after the approval is in place.

OSHA defines and reinforces Respiratory Protection Standard in a workplace. OSHA has assigned protection factors (APF) for all classes of respirators. OSHA sets procedures of fit testing each individual wearer of a tight-fitting respirator to ensure the APF can be achieved by the respirator.

FDA reviews respirators used in healthcare settings, or intended to prevent specific diseases or infections, or labeled or otherwise represented as filtering surgical smoke or plumes, filtering specific amounts of viruses or bacteria, reducing the amount of and/or killing viruses, bacteria, or fungi, or containing coating technologies unrelated to filtration such as to reduce and/or kill microorganisms.

What is a Filtering Facepiece Respirator?

A Filtering Facepiece Respirator (FFR) covers the wearer's nose and mouth and creates an air-tight seal around the edges, forcing inhaled air to pass through a filter. A FFR without exhale valve(s) filters on exhale too.

What are the seven NIOSH respirator classes?

N, R, and P designations refer to the filter's oil resistance.
95, 99, 100 refers to the percent filtration efficiency.

Classes Filters at least xx% of airborne particles Resistant to Oil and Oil Aerosols
N95 95% No
N99 99% No
N100 99.97% No
R95 95% Somewhat
P95 95% Strongly
P99 99% Strongly
P100 99.97% Strongly

Surgical N95: a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator that has also been cleared by FDA as a surgical mask.

Does a N95 respirator trap particles smaller than 0.3 micron?

Yes, please see an explanation by OSHA: "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tests respirators using particles that simulate a 0.3 micron diameter because this size particle is most likely to pass through the filter. If worn correctly, the N95 respirator will filter out at least 95% of particles this size. An N95 respirator is more effective at filtering particles that are smaller or larger than 0.3 microns in size."

What are examples of molecule and particle sizes?

(one inch = 25400 micron)

Molecules, Particles Size (micron)
Oxygen 0.0005
Carbon Dioxide 0.00065
Pesticides & Herbicides 0.001
Tobacco Smoke 0.01 - 4

Household Dust 0.05 - 100
Corn Starch 0.1 - 10
Burning Wood 0.2 - 3
Bacteria 0.3 - 60
Asbestos 0.7 - 90
Anthrax 1 - 5
Car Emission 1-150
Fiberglass Insulation 1 - 1000
Mold 3 - 12
Spores from Plants 3 - 100
Human Sneeze 10 - 100
Cayenne Pepper 15 - 1000
Saw Dust 30 - 600
Human Hair 40 - 300
Beach Sand 100 - 10000

What is Fit Factor?

Fit Factor is a measure of how well a filtering facepiece respirator seals against a person's face. It is expressed as a ratio of the concentration of challenge aerosol outside a respirator to the concentration of aerosol that leaks into the respirator through the face seal.

The higher the Fit Factor, the better. A high Fit Factor means low leakage. Fit Factor is as important as Filtration Efficiency. If a high filtration efficiency respirator does not fit and leaks, it does not protect.

Uniquely Airgami

What's so special about Airgami?

Fit, breathability, and comfort.

The unique origami design conforms to your face as you breathe, move, and talk, creating an air-tight seal around your mouth and nose without an uncomfortable nose wire.

The origami folds increase the surface area of Airgami as compared to conventional masks and respirators. This gives Airgami best-in-class breathability.

The adjustable harness makes a comfortable, custom fit.

Why doesn't Airgami have an exhale valve?

Respirators and masks with exhale valves may have the same level of source control as surgical or cloth masks, which are known to have leakage and low Fit Factor. Airgami has never had exhale valves and doesn't need them.

Is Airgami patented?

Yes.
